The Humanitarian and Development Programme at IRIS was developed to help those in the welfare sector deal with the increasingly complex humanitarian environment and the new challenges facing international aid and cooperation. The Programme’s research activities are focused on strategic planning, geopolitics, international relations and organisational leadership. Its work analyses critical changes in the humanitarian system, their major driving forces and leveraging these changes strategically.
An innovative strategic approach
The Programme’s goal is to assist those involved in welfare in developing effective operational and programme strategies to meet the changing needs of the sector and to deal with the increasing complexity of the humanitarian environment.
The Programme is designed around four keystones: analysis; counsel; debate; and training. It seeks to address the critical changes currently taking place and to understand their driving forces. The Programme provides innovative strategic approaches to improve programme impact and individual influence in the international assistance and cooperation world.
Humanitarian and development organisations operate in an increasingly complex and volatile environment, subject to strong pressures and wide-sweeping transformations.
A consultancy based on operational and organisational issues
The Programme’s consultancy work is directly informed by its research findings. It can assist those involved in the humanitarian and development sector face the operational (project management, security, fundraising) and organisational (strategic planning, governance, organisational structure) issues they may face.
Expertise, network
IRIS has a long tradition of putting its working hypotheses forward for debate, whether through public events, such as conferences, Stand UP and Think Day, or through private events for experts, such as symposia, workshops and Do Day.
IRIS’ research teams are also available to organise a variety of conferences, seminars or talks on a wide range of humanitarian and development issues, including health, nutrition, the geopolitical environment, transformations, governance, collaboration or the impact of new technology. These can be held in the IRIS conference centre, off-site or even overseas.
Knowledge
IRIS’ research and training teams are on hand to participate in the events and to contribute their knowledge. With more than 50 events organised each year, the Institute also has a dedicated event management team to deal with logistics and practical matters. Recognition of IRIS and the strength of its network are testaments to the success of IRIS events in this field.
The Institute’s conference centre, located in the heart of Paris, is bookable for these events. The centre has a fully equipped auditorium as well as an adjacent room that is ideal for smaller events.
Custom-designed training
Training is the cornerstone of the Humanitarian and Development Programme. Courses are built on research findings and lessons learned through experimentation and action, and aim to build strategic capacity for professionals in the humanitarian and development sector.
The Humanitarian and Development Programme offers custom-designed training course that can be held on-site or in IRIS facilities.
IRIS, a training expert
For over 15 years, IRIS has made its knowledge and expertise available to professionals through its training courses. Courses are designed to provide students with insight into contemporary geopolitical issues. Lecture series are organised throughout the year to give students the opportunity to hone their analytic skills and discuss with experts.
More about professional training programmes
The IRIS Sup’ school also offers degree programmes for professionals. There are five courses in a year over the course of eight months. With working professionals in mind, courses are organised two days a week. There are also two distance education courses for students to work at their own pace in a structured learning environment.
IRIS offers a number of short-term, skills-development programmes as well.
Through the IRIS Sup’ school, the Institute offers Master’s degree programmes in “International Programme Management” and “Humanitarian Action: Strategic Issues and Project Management” [both in French] for the humanitarian leaders of tomorrow.
The Humanitarian and Development Programme also offers professional development courses in “Bargaining strategies and tools” and “Project lifecycle management”.
