The Defence and Security Industry Programme seeks to provide information to policymakers, industry officials and the general public on defence and armament issues and security technology. The Programme studies the broad outlook and trends in this field. It draws notably on the Armament Industry European Research Group (ARES Group) network.
Internationally renowned expertise
IRIS is recognised nationally and internationally for its work. The Institute has been commissioned to prepare consultancy reports, research and studies on the defence industry for both public- and private-sector clients. The Institute’s works aims to inform decision-making and provide analysis to government agencies and defence industries.
To help companies navigate and advance in a complex defence environment and grow internationally, IRIS offers a range of services and expertise that are suited to short-, medium- and long-term needs and strategies.
An interdisciplinary team, the power of experience
The research team is organised around a core of in-house research fellows who cooperate with a number of associate research fellows. The team is interdisciplinary and includes researchers with backgrounds in political science, the economics of the defence industry and defence industry engineers. Research teams bring together interdisciplinary experts with country experts to cover the full range of defence- and security-industry issues.
IRIS has links with French and EU defence agency officials, including from the European Defence Agency and the European Commission, as well as with the defence industry and with civil society.
An in-depth expertise
The programme looks at:
– the economic, industrial and technological capacities of defence technology and industrial bases in France, in the EU and internationally;
– national defence industry policy; – defence and security innovation policies;
– integration of EU armament policies: regulation, cooperation, research financing;
– export policies and export control policies;
– defence and security markets;
– international arms trade regulation, civil society and armament, ethics and armament.
Ares Group, an international network lead by IRIS
IRIS leads an international group of defence-industry researchers through its Armament Industry European Research Group (ARES Group). A Steering Board, composed of defence agency officials and private-sector representatives from France and the EU, determines the Group’s work programme. ARES’ work deals with current defence issues in the EU. It also provides insight and better understanding of the medium- and long-term issues affecting the defence and security industry
Expertise, network
IRIS makes its expertise and research network available for public and private clients to organise a wide range of events on the defence and security industry and the effects of defence policy on procurement policies. Such events also cover legislation on the trade in arms within the EU and internationally (Arms Trade Treaty).
Private events are designed to foster the exchange of views and facilitate discussion among high‑level decision-makers in an intimate and informal setting. Public events are an opportunity to promote and discuss strategic research focuses for clients.
Knowledge
IRIS’ research and training teams are on hand to participate in the events and to contribute their knowledge. With more than 50 events organised each year, the Institute also has a dedicated event management team to deal with logistics and practical matters. Recognition of IRIS and the strength of its network are testaments to the success of IRIS events in this field.
The Institute’s conference centre, located in the heart of Paris, is bookable for these events. The centre has a fully equipped auditorium as well as an adjacent room that is ideal for smaller events.

IRIS offers custom-designed training courses for clients that can be held on-site or in IRIS facilities. Courses deal with a range of topics, including the political and strategic environments of export market countries, the introduction of sales teams in local markets, EU defence and security regulation and the control of war material exports.
Courses are developed in collaboration with a company’s human resources and strategic planning departments and its international divisions. The courses are designed to meet specific client needs.
The Ministry for Labour, Employment, Vocational Training and Industrial Relations recognises IRIS courses as certified professional developed courses.

For over 15 years, IRIS has made its knowledge and expertise available to professionals through its training courses. Courses are designed to provide students with insight into contemporary geopolitical issues.
